MAKE YOUR OWN MAGNIFYING GLASS

Magnifying glasses are used to enlarge the details of tiny objects up close. Make your own and use it to observe tiny creatures in your area.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Clear plastic bottle

Marker

Scissors

Water

1 Find a clear plastic bottle, such as a two-liter soda bottle. It is important for the plastic to be clear and smooth.

2 Starting right under the opening of the bottle, draw a circle (about the size of the top of a cup).

3 Ask an adult to help you cut out the circle. The piece of plastic you cut out will have a slight curve in it because of the part of the bottle you cut it from.

4 Put several drops of water onto the plastic piece.

5 Your magnifying glass is ready. Test it out by holding it over a book. Notice how the print looks bigger through the water. This works because the water bends the light traveling through the plastic.

6 Now use your magnifying glass to observe tiny insects or bugs.
